Ubuntu For Mac G5 Ppc
We reported how to run upcoming Lubuntu desktop LXQt in Xenial Xerus on a Raspberry Pi 2 and now, thanks to tester Herminio Hernandez, Jr. (and his iBook G4), we can confirm that it works on PowerPC machines!
To replicate:
- install a Xenial Xerus 16.04 image (the Alpha 2 just came out!)
- follow the instructions on the wiki to install the LXQt packages
First of all, all you have to do is grab the latest ubuntu version from the Ubuntu Download Page which will download an.iso file containing the OS. The burning process of the.iso file to a USB can be achived using Unetbootin, which runs on windows, linux and mac.Download the Mac version and install it.
Previous to having the LXQt packages in the repositories, PPC testers were unable to use the PPA because Launchpad didn’t build for architectures outside of i386 or amd64. The other benefit is that it should be less cutting edge and thus more stable.
Sometimes, you can even revive an old PowerPC Mac running Linux. Drive you have in your G4- or G5-based PowerBook or Mac. This affects Ubuntu and all of its. The combined install/live DVD allows you either to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer, or (by entering 'live' at the boot prompt) to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all. There are two images available, each for a different type of computer: PC (Intel x86) install/live DVD For almost all PCs.
Since we release PowerPC images only for LTS versions and since we’re not planning on releasing LXQt for Xenial, there will be a bit more waiting for PPC users, but at least in this way, a pretty solid preview can be obtained.
Should you follow this procedure, please report any bugs against the appropriate package itself, since all of the necessary packages are in the repos.
Meanwhile, PPC testers can get back to ISO testing the LXDE Xenial Xerus image, which is due 21 April 2016.

Since 7.04 Ubuntu, PowerPC downloads of Ubuntu are not available on all Ubuntu mirrors. Below you'll find links to the ISOs on the main Ubuntu server, as well as, help on finding mirrors.
Please review the PowerPC FAQ and the PowerPC Known Issues pages before installing. All the information you need for a successful install should be in those pages, so make sure you check them out first before wasting your time and effort on needless internet searches. Please do tell somebody on the Apple forum if you think the instructions are unclear or are missing something, but it would be great if you could make the improvement yourself!

The following iso's are available for testing. In order for an iso to be released it must complete a series of test cases - volunteers are needed for this! Please also report bugs so that they get fixed prior to release.

This is not an complete list (please add to it). Using the list of official CD mirrors and a bit of ingenuity traversing the mirror directory structures (for example, click on the Parent Directory/ or ../ link) you can probably find more mirrors that contain PowerPC releases. Most PowerPC ISOs are in a ports directory, but for others (e.g. 12.04) you can find them in the releases directory. Daily development builds can be found with other architectures in the daily/ (Alternate CD) or daily-live/ (Desktop CD) directories.
